Joanna Palmer

Joanna Palmer

I am emerging artist, living and working in Belfast. As a recent graduate of Belfast School of Art, I am multidisciplinary in my practice. It primarily takes form through video, text, installation, and sound. In a theory rich and research led practice, I am dealing with representations of contemporary femininity that transverse both the physical and digital landscape. A lifelong fascination with language and communication consistently influences the work, be it through manipulation of meaning, audience participation, or the artist’s voice. Audience participation is central in the work, playing with performative nuances to evoke multi-sensory, stimulating conceptual works. Using my practice to work through a relentless self-questioning, I am examining both my own and the collective experience of young women learning how to navigate the visible realm. Notions of excess, gluttony, pleasure, and shame are all at play in my practice, inviting the audience into provocative and disconcerting spaces that both give them a pleasurable sense of ease as a voyeur, while also exposing them as the peeping tom through the keyhole.
